Follow these 5 steps below to properly clean your toilet tank as your next DIY task.
Why Should You Clean Your Toilet Tank?
Unfortunately, your toilet tank can become a hotbed of action for both fungus and bacteria. Toilet water can cause the buildup of mold and mildew over time, especially if you do not flush the toilet often enough.
Always keep an eye out for a red ring that could signal the presence of Serratia marcescens. This is a harmful bacterium that could cause many unpleasant issues.
How To Clean The Inside Of A Toilet Tank
The best way to clean a toilet tank is to begin by soaking it to make the scrubbing as effortless as possible.
Here are a few supplies you’ll need for this task:
- Baking soda.
- Pumice stone.
- White vinegar.
- Bleach-free disinfectant.
- Sponge or soft brush.
Step 1. Soak The Tank
- Begin by soaking the tank with vinegar.
- If there are any noticeable buildups, pour four cups of vinegar into the tank.
- Let this soak for up to one hour.
Step 2. Empty The Tank Completely
- Start this step by locating the water valve.
- It is typically located on the wall.
- Turn it until the flow of water stops.
- Now flush the toilet until the tank drains entirely.
Step 3. Scrub
- Use a bleach-free disinfectant and sponge to scrub the interior of the tank.
- Clean the tank’s components, including the flush and fill valve.
- Do this gently with a soft brush or sponge.
Step 4. Wash Away Stains
- For rust stains, apply a paste that is equally mixed with baking soda and vinegar.
- Let this solution sit for one hour.
- Then scrub it with the soft brush.
- Use a wet pumice stone if you wish to get rid of any hard water stains.
- Always ensure the stone and surface are wet prior to this action.
Step 5. Refill The Toilet Tank
- After the tank has been scrubbed, flush the toilet.
- Turn the water back on once the tank has been emptied.
- Let the tank refill and flush the toilet once again.
- Do this to rinse away any potential remaining cleanser.
How Often Should You Clean A Toilet Tank?
The good news is it’s probably only necessary to clean your toilet tank about twice per year. Of course, there can be a few exceptions to this rule.
For example, if your toilet utilizes water from an area featuring hard water (more dissolved calcium and magnesium), you’ll want to clean the tank more often. Additionally, you’ll want to clean the tank more frequently if your bathroom is consistently warm and humid.
